The Bell and the Ocean: the leader we are waiting for is not coming

Why the future needs waves of people who lead themselves, not one more person at the top of a pyramid.

By Luigino Bottega

Why the future needs waves of people who lead themselves, not one more person at the top of a pyramid.

The leader we are waiting for is not coming.

Not because there are no good people left. Because the model itself is broken. For thousands of years we have organised hope as a pyramid: one person at the top with a vision, everyone else below, following.

I have worked in communication since 1984, first in Italy and, since 2000, in Budapest. I have seen how quickly people hand their hope to whoever speaks with the most certainty. I understand the impulse. It is as old as we are.

But I have come to believe it is the root of our crisis, not its solution.

The pyramid and the saviour

Across human history, we have followed whoever made us feel safe. Whoever promised a better tomorrow, usually wrapped in a vision that slowly hardened into dogma.

Those we called leaders were not more than the rest of us. Some simply saw their vision more clearly. Many were manipulators. And every pyramid shares the same weakness: when the person at the top falls, the whole structure falls with them.

Today the pattern has a new face. We wait for a saviour, a politician, a CEO, a prophet, a technology. Or we complain about the others. Both are comfortable. Both save energy. Both spare us the hardest work there is: changing ourselves.

The real crisis is not a lack of leaders. It is that we have outsourced our own responsibility.

From the pyramid to the ocean

I see leadership differently. Not as a pyramid with someone on top, however inspiring, but as waves in an ocean.

A wave is not separate from the ocean. It is the ocean, moving in one place.

In the same way, every person is a local expression of the whole. This is the fractal principle at the heart of my trilogy Fractal (www.fractalthetrilogy.com): the part carries the pattern of the whole.

Waves do not command other waves. They pass on movement. A person who leads themselves, with awareness, inspires others to do the same. No center. No top. Nothing collapses when one wave settles, because the ocean is still there.

This is not a movement with rules, structures, and control. It is something simpler and more demanding: people becoming leaders of themselves, and connected enough to inspire each other.

Awareness: the clarity of connection

At the core of all of this is awareness. I understand it as the ability of a living being to connect, with more clarity, to the Source, to Truth.

The clearer that connection, the easier it becomes to decode, here in the physical world, a vision of a better future for the whole system, and to see our own part in keeping it in balance.

And one principle protects everything else: nobody possesses the Truth. Not a person, not a group, not an institution. Everyone can take part in exploring it.

Anyone who claims to own the Truth has already lost it.

The bell

If no one can be forced to awaken, the real question becomes: how does the desire to evolve get switched on inside a person?

Think of a bell.

A bell does not push anything. It sounds, and whatever shares its frequency begins to vibrate. That is the difference between inspiration and manipulation.

The inner bell can be rung in several ways:

  • The crack: a crisis, a loss, a discomfort that makes the old way of living stop working.
  • The encounter: meeting someone who lives the change instead of preaching it.
  • The question: a question that, once heard, cannot be unheard.
  • Awe: nature, beauty, a moment of seeing the whole.
  • The consequence: seeing the real effect of our actions on others and on the system.

The bell sounds different to each of us, depending on where we stand. For someone whose priority is safety, it sounds like protection for their family. For someone driven by achievement, like meaningful mastery. For someone who seeks belonging, like community. For someone seeking meaning, like purpose. For someone who perceives the whole, like the Source itself.

Same sound, different ears. No one is higher or lower. Awareness is not a status. It is a capacity we keep developing.

The spiral of self-evolution

Once the bell has rung, a path opens. Not a circle, a spiral, because every turn starts from more clarity than the one before:

Desire → introspection → clarity → wise action → experience → growth → impact

And then the step that turns one person's evolution into collective change:

My impact becomes your encounter.

The way I live rings someone else's bell. Their desire wakes. Their spiral begins. That is how a wave spreads. Not by persuasion. By example.

The water between the waves

Waves need water to travel. Without a medium, even the strongest inspiration fades. But that medium does not need rules or institutions. It needs three things:

  • A language: love. Not as sentiment, but as the choice to want the good of the other and of the whole.
  • A place: every time two people stop and start to talk deeply. No headquarters, no membership. A table, a walk, a conversation that goes beyond the surface is enough.
  • A practice: stepping out of your comfort zone, every day. Comfort is where the waiting and the complaining live. Growth begins one step outside it.

And a few shared questions to keep the direction honest: Does this preserve dignity? Does it regenerate or deplete? Who is left out? What is my part in the balance?

A true bell and a false bell

Manipulators ring bells too. That is exactly how every false saviour has worked. So how can we tell the difference? A simple test:

A true bell leaves you freer and more responsible. A false bell leaves you more dependent on the one who rings it.

If someone asks you to follow them instead of awakening yourself, that is your signal. The goal of real leadership is not to create followers. It is to make itself unnecessary.

Two clocks

Some will say we do not have time. The world is accelerating, systems are fragile, and awakening cannot be forced.

Both are true. That is why two clocks run at once. Now: anyone, from wherever they stand, can take one more aware action today. Depth: awareness grows over a lifetime and across generations. Neither waits for the other.

We cannot force anyone to be ready. But we can ring more bells.

Be the bell

The leader we are waiting for is not coming, because that leader was never meant to be one person. It is supposed to be each of us, leading ourselves with awareness, and connected enough to wake each other up.

Stop waiting. Start ringing.

What was the bell that woke something in you: a crack, an encounter, a question? And what did you actually change afterward?
